How do I choose the right bike helmet for my child?

When toddlers jump on the bike, for them it is a great fun and excitement, and for us it is often a feeling of slight anxiety or worry about their safety.

Every parent wants to make sure that such a game will be pure joy for a child, without any “curses”. A bicycle helmet can certainly help, and it is worth getting every young enthusiast of bicycle thrills accustomed to it. We advise what to pay attention to when choosing such head protection.

The right fit

Child can not tell us about the fact that his helmet is too large or too small, so it is up to us to choose the best possible helmet. When choosing should be guided primarily:

  • weight – bike helmet for children should be light (180-280 grams). Delicate skeletal system of small children should not be overloaded by massive headgear;
  • size – bike helmet should be neither too big nor too small. It should not tilt to one side during head movements, it also should not press on the temples;
  • shape – each of us has a slightly different shape of the head. Most models of helmets are universal, but there are also versions for people with more oblong or round head shape;
  • ventilation – cycling is usually done in warm weather. Ventilation holes provide air circulation.

How to choose a helmet size?

Size selection is done by measuring the circumference of the child’s head. It is best to measure it with a tailor’s tape measure. The tape should be placed slightly above the eyebrows. The resulting number of centimeters is the exact size of the child’s head, and thus the inner circumference of the helmet

It is important not to choose a helmet to fit the result obtained, but choose a slightly larger model. This provides the necessary amount of comfortable play inside and allows for longer use of the helmet (remember that children grow very quickly). It is best to choose a model with an adjustable knob.

When trying on the helmet you should pay attention to the clasp. It should form a Y shape around the ear, and the chin strap should be adjusted so that it fits the chin enough to put a finger under it. The strap itself must be made of material that will not cause skin abrasions.

New or used?

We advise against buying used helmets. Even if at first glance you can’t see any cracks on the outside, a used helmet may have a damaged internal structure. This immediately disqualifies the helmet from further use, as another hit on the same spot or next to it may not protect the head from injury.

There is a reason why European safety standards have been established to guarantee good quality. When shopping, look for models with the CE mark (EU quality certificate) from reliable manufacturers.

Safety first

Despite the fact that wearing a helmet while cycling is not imposed by law, it should be treated by parents as a necessary safety measure anyway

It is not difficult to predict that a few years old children may fall down and get injured. In such situations, the most important thing is to protect the head of a toddler, which can provide a properly selected helmet. Consequently, when buying it, you should be guided primarily by the protective qualities and the right size, and consider aesthetic issues in second place.
